The quality of that bar directly affects foot health, keel bone condition, sleep quality, and ultimately egg production and longevity. A poorly designed roost causes bumblefoot from pressure points, keel bone deformities from bars that are too narrow, and chronic stress from roosting positions that are uncomfortable or insecure. A well-designed roost costs little more than a bad one but pays dividends in bird health for years.
The ideal roosting bar has a flat or slightly rounded top surface about two to four inches wide, smooth but not slippery, made from a material that does not conduct cold excessively in winter. Natural hardwood branches meet all these criteria and cost nothing if you have access to trees.
