Bumblefoot, technically called pododermatitis, develops when staphylococcus bacteria enter the foot through a small wound, splinter, or irritation point on the foot pad. The bacteria establish an infection beneath the skin that the body walls off with a hard, fibrous capsule, forming the characteristic lump and dark scab on the bottom of the foot. Without treatment, the infection grows, spreads to deeper tissues, and can eventually reach the bone, causing a systemic infection that becomes life-threatening.
The most common causes are rough or narrow roost bars that create pressure points on the foot pad, landing impacts from jumping off elevated surfaces onto hard ground, sharp objects in the run such as wire ends or rocks, and wet, dirty bedding that softens foot skin and facilitates bacterial entry. Heavy breeds are disproportionately affected because their body weight creates more pressure on the foot pad, and the higher landing impact from jumping off roosts causes more micro-damage to the foot surface.
Identifying Bumblefoot Early

Treatment Procedure

Prevention
Address the root causes that lead to bumblefoot. Replace narrow or rough roost bars with wide, smooth bars that distribute the bird's weight across a larger foot surface area. Place thick bedding or rubber mats below roost bars to cushion landing impacts. Remove sharp objects from the run including wire ends, rock fragments, and broken hardware. Keep coop bedding dry and clean to maintain foot skin integrity. Heavy breeds benefit from lower roost bars that reduce the height and impact of their daily morning dismount.
Provide a clean, dry dust bath that promotes foot health. The fine substrate in the dust bath naturally exfoliates foot skin and keeps it in good condition. Dry run conditions overall reduce the skin softening that facilitates bacterial entry. Good drainage, adequate bedding depth, and prompt repair of water leaks all contribute to the dry foot conditions that prevent bumblefoot from developing.
Advanced Cases and Veterinary Referral
If the bumblefoot infection extends beyond a simple superficial scab, with deep tissue involvement, spreading redness up the leg, or a foul odor from the wound site, this is beyond safe home treatment. Deep infections can reach the bone (osteomyelitis) and cause systemic sepsis. A veterinarian can prescribe oral or injectable antibiotics, perform surgical debridement under proper anesthesia, and assess whether the infection has progressed to a point where amputation of the toe or aggressive surgical intervention is needed to save the bird's life.
Post-treatment monitoring is as important as the treatment itself.
